Aspirin and Asthma

20.02.2004

(Systematic review of prevalence of aspirin induced asthma and its implications for clinical practice - BMJ 2004;328:434-7) Asthma is a well documented side effect of aspirin and other NSAIDs in certain patients and the literature on consumer packs has reflected this for a number of years.

This review of published data is an interesting bringing together of a range of trials of varying sizes and quality. Statistical analysis conducted retrospectively on multi- sourced data is always challenging to the epidemiologist. The Foundation is grateful to the authors for a useful survey. However the overall interpretation suggests little need to change the current recommendations for use of aspirin as an effective household remedy for pain, fever and inflammation.
