Ten Rules for Using Aspirin Sensibly and Safely


1. Do not take aspirin on an empty stomach

2. Give aspirin the best chance of controlling pain by taking it early

3. If you feel that you need to take aspirin for more than a few days, consult a doctor

4. If you have, or have had, a peptic ulcer, do not take aspirin frequently without consulting a doctor

5. Never exceed a dose of 1g (3 tablets) 4 times a day (4g daily total) except on doctor's advice

6. If aspirin upsets you, let a doctor know so that it can be noted on your records

7. As with all medicines, do not take alcohol with aspirin.

8. If you are taking any treatment suggested by a doctor, ask him or her if it is safe to take aspirin as well

9. In some countries there are restrictions on the use of aspirin in children under 16 except on the advice of a doctor. Position papers
