Press Release – September 2017Professor Peter Rothwell hands Professor Carlo Patrono the Chair of the Aspirin Foundation Scientific Advisory Board
Professor Carlo Patrono is delighted to take on the role of Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) at the International Aspirin Foundation. Professor Patrono looks forward to further developing the Foundation as an instrument for a joint venture of the medical/scientific community and Industry in exploring aspirin’s role in disease prevention and treatment. He highlights the current research interest in aspirin’s second life as an anti-platelet agent as well as a novel tool for the integrated prevention of cardiovascular disease and some cancers.
Professor Patrono is a strong advocate of aspirin’s multifaceted benefits to global human health. He calls for a partnership of minds, both basic scientists and clinical investigators, in helping to interpret the results of newly reported aspirin trials and promote further research into the mechanism(s) of action of low-dose aspirin as a basis for the design of innovative clinical trials. He sees the International Aspirin Foundation SAB as a key catalyst of these endeavours.
The International Aspirin Foundation thanks Professor Rothwell for his dedicated work as Chair of the SAB, which among other things has led to the expansion globally of the reach of the Foundation’s educational activities and the excellent programme for the recent “Aspirin: 120 years of Innovation” Scientific Conference in Berlin, which included live streaming to and from China.
Professor Patrono is Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at the Catholic University School of Medicine in Rome and at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where his research interests include the clinical investigation of platelet activation and inhibition in diabetes mellitus and myeloproliferative neoplasms, as well as basic research into the mechanism(s) of action of low-dose aspirin in preventing colorectal cancer.
